Updated on 6 November 2026 · How we verify
Quick answer: You must be at least 16 years old by 30 September of the admission year (for 2026: by 30 September 2026). Under-16 ‘gifted’ candidates may be admitted only with UTME 320+, 80%+ in post-UTME and 80%+ in O’Level from one sitting, after a national committee assessment. For 2026/2027: about 39,000 under-16 candidates sat the 2026 UTME; 391 scored 320+ and 108 met every criterion.

The rule
You must be at least 16 years old by 30 September of the admission year (for 2026: by 30 September 2026). Under-16 ‘gifted’ candidates may be admitted only with UTME 320+, 80%+ in post-UTME and 80%+ in O’Level from one sitting, after a national committee assessment.
Why it exists
The National Policy on Education sets 16 as the minimum entry age for tertiary education (6-3-3-4 structure). JAMB enforces it through the NIN date of birth captured at registration; there is no upper age limit for UTME.
Under-16 ‘exceptionally gifted’ route
- UTME score of 320 or above.
- At least 80% in the institution’s post-UTME screening.
- At least 80% (24/30 points) in O’Level from one sitting.
- Assessment by the National Committee on Underage Admission; results are withheld until the evaluation is complete.
Practical implications
- Candidates who will not be 16 by 30 September should wait a year unless they meet the gifted criteria.
- Date of birth comes from NIMC — correct errors at NIMC before registration.
- Private universities are bound by the same rule for CAPS admissions.
